Good Day to you all !

The 2011 Wildfowl breeding season has been a strange one:
Too hot, too dry and too expensive !! Not good weather for Ducks !!!
Let me explain :

This year has been far too dry and too hot at in the early and mid spring convinced a lot of wildfowl that they had migrated too late and missed the breeding season, the knock-on effect was that some species laid only one clutch and some species did not lay at all !!! The overal result is that numbers of wildfowl bred countrywide are reduced, with many replacment breeders needed for the cold weather losses of december 2010, it is anticipated that sales of wildfowl will be brisk and prices high.

Wheat pices remain high, we have paid upto £190 per tonne this year which is more than 100 % increase on 2010. Wheat forms the basis of all of the breeder, layer and grower pellets and these products too have increased in price, although at warwickshire waterfowl we buy in duck food by the lorry load, elevated diesel prices have further increased the costs of breeding and rearing these wonderful birds. Electricity costs have risen, meaning increased costs for the time the duckings are in the brooders.

Ok you get the picture, This is why these birds are not cheap ! ( excuse the pun !) its not been an easy year, and with wheat prices set to rise, theres one thing for sure.... I'll be growing wheat in my window boxes this year agian !!! :D

The good news is there has been some good breeding successes at Warwickshire Waterfowl this year, With the appointment of a new head Keeper - David Garry, David's done an excellant job with the young stock and we have bred many birds

So there are plenty for sale at the moment, although bird sales are brisk and it should not be long before these are sold. My advice is not to wait before buying them, come and get them while you can !!
